AppDynamics integration

This integration ingests notifications from AppDynamics and maps them to Moogsoft events automatically.

This integration was validated with AppDynamics Controller build 21.11.1-778 on January 4, 2022.

Create a new integration in Moogsoft Cloud

Log in to your Moogsoft Cloud instance.
Choose Integrations > Ingestion Services > AppDynamics.
Click Add New Integration.

The new integration includes a custom endpoint, a set of default mappings to convert AppDynamics data to Moogsoft events, and a deduplication key to group similar events into alerts.

(Optional) Once your endpoint starts receiving data from AppDynamics, you can customize how the integration maps and deduplicates this data. For more information, see Use mapping types in custom integrations and Configure deduplication key under Define a custom integration.

When to use the AppDynamics integration

Moogsoft offers two convenient mechanisms for integration with AppDynamics.

Use the Moogsoft AppDynamics Integration:
- To ingest events from AppDynamics and send them to Moogsoft with automatic mapping.
- When you can configure your AppDynamics instance to authenticate against a Moogsoft endpoint to send data to Moogsoft. This integration does not require a Moogsoft Collector and you can use authentication.
Use the Moogsoft AppDynamics Plugin with the Moogsoft Collector when you:
- Want to send AppDynamics data to the Moogsoft Events API or when you cannot install a collector on the same system as your SaaS product.
- Don’t want to make direct outbound calls from your environment.
- Can install a collector on a host in your environment and it will act as a proxy.

Set up your AppDynamics instance

Before you begin: Within Moogsoft, make sure that you have the following page open in another browser tab or window: Integrations > Ingestion Services > AppDynamics > your-integration-name

To set up your AppDynamics instance:

Within AppDynamics, click Alert & Respond (top menu) and then HTTP Request Templates (left menu).
Create a new request template. Specify the settings as defined below:
- Custom Templating Variables: Skip this section.
- Request URL:
  - Method = POST
  - RAW URL = The events endpoint, as provided in the Moogsoft web UI under: Integrations > Ingestion Services > AppDynamics > your-integration-name > Configuration Information > Moogsoft Endpoint.
  - URL Encoding = UTF-8
- Authentication: Skip this section.
- Custom Request Headers:
  - Create two new headers with the following parameters.
    Header = Content-Type
    Value = application/json
    Header = apiKey
    Value = Your Moogsoft API key.
    To create a new API key to use with your integration, follow the instructions in Manage API keys.
- Payload
  Set the Mime Type to application/json and Payload Encoding to UTF-8. Then specify the payload you want to send in the Payload field.
  The following script shows an example payload with AppDynamics variables included. You can copy and paste this script into the Payload field.

  Note the following:
  - Only the source, severity, description, check, and service fields are required.
  - The tags value enables you to specify custom data that is not defined in the standard schema.
  - If AppDynamics variables do not provide the values you want, use the following workarounds as needed:
    Specify hard-coded strings for the values of interest.
    Use event workflows to enhance new alerts with relevant data from your production environment.
- Response Handling Criteria
  Under Failure Criteria, add the following status codes: 400, 401, 405, 406.
  Under Success Criteria, add the following status codes: 200, 202.
  Note
  For the 200 status code, make sure that Expect Payload is enabled and the Content Type is application/json.
- Settings
  Disable One Request Per Event and leave the other settings at their defaults.
Add this HTTP request template to all AppDynamics policies you want to observe in Moogsoft.
In AppDynamics, choose Alert & Respond (top) and then Policies (left). Then, for each policy that you want to observe in Moogsoft, do the following.
1. In the Trigger tab, check the Enabled and Execute actions in batch options. Then enable all the event triggers that you want to observe in Moogsoft;
2. In the Actions tab, add the HTTP request template you just defined to the Actions to Execute tab.
